Here is the progress on the cross for this week. Not sure if I’ll get it done by Easter as it is really time-consuming.
Progress as of 3/3. I am saving the middle for last.
You might remember the storage unit I built a couple of months ago. Well, it had a problem. The thin sliding doors I cut started to warp so I had to make a frame for the doors. Note two of the frames had to go on the inside so they’d slide by each other.
Had to put a frame on it to keep it from warping.
If you need me – I’ll be in the shop.

I bought my DeWalt a few years ago and have loved it every since. It was worth the investment.

Andrew that is so intricate, such a detail, and certainly will be such a gorgeous piece for many years to come. Thank you for sharing the progress, and I have a feeling you will have it completed by Easter.

What patience. Are you using a Flex Shaft, Dremel or hand tools?

I am using a scroll saw (De Walt 788) with a very fine blade (about the thickness of 5 sheets of paper).

So you have to release the saw blade after cutting each section! Patient man. It looks like you do fine work. Thanks for explaining.

Ahh. Your fine artisan’s work reflects so much patience and depth of soul. We “sketchers” would never be able to get such clean line and meticulous detail, let alone to such magnificent scale. Just beautiful.

Thanks – this will be second one I cut. Three years ago I did one out of cheep plywood and regretted putting that much work into poor materials.

That cross is so beautiful, Andrew. Is it for your church? You must have the patience of a saint! 🙂

Yes, when I finish I’ll be donating the finished piece back to the church.

What kind of wood is underneath that pattern? 🙂

The wood came from a silver maple tree that had to be cut down at our church. A number of woodworkers took wood home to make projects. One man turned a number of bowls out of the wood which we sold to cover the cost of removing the old tree and planting a replacement.

Yeah, I try not to think about it while I am working on it.

My brain hurts just looking at the work involved in that scrolling. Good on you for tackling such work.

You did do quite a bit in a week. How much time was spent on it to get as much done?

I’ve got about 20 hours into it so far. I figure I have another 10-15 before it’s done. Then I have to make a base for it, sand, apply finish. I’ll have a good 40-45 hours in it before I am done.

That cross….amazing. I simply do not have the patience to do such work. I wish I had that trait, but alas, no.
