Here is what happened to the marquetry I was working last week. It went on to this potpourri bowl. Wrapping marquetry around a curved surface is tricky. Our marquetry club did a workshop on this last Saturday and here is how mine turned out:
Another view:
The top is a pewter part we purchased . It is set into a little grove in the bowl turning.
And one more view of the marquetry, this time the leaves:
A bonus picture, I’ve mounted the cross in its base. Just needs a coat or two of finish and a brass plaque before I give it to the church.
Next week, I tell you what this pile of parts is all about.
That’s it on the woodworking front this week.
If you need me – I’ll be in the shop.
Andrew
This is lovely. The clean lines of the bowl are perfect for the intricacies of the marquetry design.

Oh my goodness, this is incredible. I am so impressed by it. Does it inspire you to write a poem? So delicate and sturdy. A true labor of love. The pewter is the icing on your amazing work of art. Xx

Sometimes I think of lines of poems that I’m working on while in the shop and when I am the keyboard writing I often think about woodworking projects I am doing. The two art forms do inform each other.

That is a lovely piece of workmanship and a real achievement! You should be proud…I’m sure your church will be.

Hidden mistake and all…it is still a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. “Perfect” is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, I work hard not to point out the flaws in my work – which in most cases only I can see. But in this case, if I turned it around, you’d notice.

Do you sell these? I would love to buy one if you decide to sell them.
Beautiful work Andrew.

Not yet, but thanks for asking – it’s nice to know you like it that much. I know it looks nice in the picture, but it’s not really salable quality – I took the photo from just the right angle to hide the major mistake on the back.
Also I don’t really have time to make any of these to sell right now. Some day I hope to make a few things for sale and will likely set up an Esty or eBay account for that later in the year. Stay tuned…
