I haven’t been in the workshop much this month. I do have plenty of excuses though: We have house guests, it’s been hot, work’s been busy, and there’s this book editing I’ve been doing…
Still, I’ve made some progress on my shop cart. The top has been installed and I put on the dowels to hold the hose and extension cord. Here are a couple of pictures:
Air hose and power cord now have a home.
Side by side with my table saw. The cart is the same height and can be used as a out-feed/in feed/side feed for the table saw.
Someday this will house a set of drawers for my nailers and supplies. Someday.
You can see that the cart has already been put to use. I am building a planter box for the back garden and this cart is coming in very handy for that project. Planter pictures next week.

I have been looking at doing a project like this. I need a stand for my plainer and scroll saw. Have you seen the carts with a tool mounted to the top that flips to store the tool? I think it looks really cool, but do not know how it would work in practice. Thoughts?

I’ve seen those. I think the top platform is mounted to a pipe through the center. A couple of latches hold the tool in place. Unlatch and you can flip the whole thing along the axis of the pipe. I have thought about making one with a planer on one side and a jointer on the other, but it’s likely a long time before I do that.

Looking great! My husband had a similar idea for his garage, and has been busy building work benches on casters. He makes them 4 ft long and then mounts things like his chop saw or drill press on them. When he wants to use that tool, he opens the garage door and wheels the bench outside so that all the sawdust and mess stays outside!

I like that idea. Right now only two of mine can roll outside to the driveway. This new one and my table saw. Do you’re work on a breezy day and no mess at all.

Looks great! I wish my kids knew how to do things like this. Many schools don’t have shop classes anymore which is a shame because kids don’t learn carpentry skills. And my hubs never developed the skills either so he can’t pass them on. (And I certainly can’t either!) Kind of a shame.

Thanks. I took shop classes in school, but I also come from a long line of woodworkers. I am hopeful that the current “maker” movement will get folks making stuff again. You might look around for a maker fair near you – would be a great outing for your kids to see what can be done.

That’s a great idea. I should have done that when they were younger. Now at 15 and 18 years old, I might have missed the boat. But it couldn’t hurt to try!

Some the maker groups are also doing tech things – robots, computers (think mythbusters) and such. Check around. There might be something.

The 2x6s are off cuts from the planter box and the tools were there either to add atmosphere to the photo or because I was too lazy to clear off the cart top. I’ll let you decide…

It’s looks as if you have been very busy. I am no woodworker, but the standard looks very high to my untutored eyes. I would think that something like this would make a lovely Christmas present for grandchildren. Kids really enjoy riding around in things like this. They bring their imagination into play!
