Today the weather forecasters are saying the first official cold arctic storm is headed my way. There’s a possibility that this storm will lower our drought condition from “Exceptional” to merely “Extreme.” With the hope that this is the first of many storms, here is a final picture of the planter box after Heather put the plants in. The little tree is an Acer, Japanese Maple. The other plants are, umm, green ones.
I hope to have one more woodworking picture this week.
If you need me – I’ll be buying an umbrella,
Andrew
Looking good. Sure it loves serving it’s purpose, giving those plants a nice home. 🙂

By the way, I had to buy an umbrella from Amazon! LOL! Now It came in two days and now I’m ready! Let it pour! I really love the look of your planter and they way it nestles in between the decking and the bricks. I hope you were very optimistic and planned ahead with great drainage holes. 🙂

I put in a lot of drainage holes, just in case. Good suggestion on the umbrella. Most folks around here don’t seem to know what they are. 😉

oops, just read the other comments, see others have warned you about the japanese maple too, I have a dwarf blue spruce in my front garden that was only supposed to get to 6 feet. It is currently about 10, hopefully won’t get much bigger

I had a ‘dwarf blue spruce,’ but had to removing when the dwarf when to 15 feet in three years. We have two other acer trees (Japanese maple) in the yard of this variety that we buy from a local nursery. So far the ten year-old tree is 4 feet tall and the 6 year old is just under 3 feet. I will post updates and we’ll see how tall it gets.

interesting, I’ve seen a few that are well over 15 feet in clients’ gardens, you must have the true dwarf types

Out here in California we have active bonsai growers and enthusiasts. Dwarf types are common around here.

Gorgeous. How nice to sit by your planters and read or just notice them as you walk by. So calming.

This planter we can see from the house, which is an extra bonus.

Yes, I agree with Annika, I think the acer will get too big for the box, which is a very impressive creation by the way.

I was told this is a dwarf variety and shouldn’t grow more than 4 feet high. When it gets to 4.5 feet, I’ve got another place in the garden to transplant it…

Good luck with the umbrella.

I’ve tried two stores already. No one in California seems to know what an Umbrella is. I knew I should have bought one the last time I was in London…
