Wednesday Woodworking: Cat Shelf

Finally installed the cat shelves.  Yup, you read that right: cat shelf.  A place to keep your extra cats.

Well, not exactly.  Last summer we enclosed part of patio and that’s where are kitties live.  We thought it would be nice to give them a place to sit up high and look out the windows (cats love to look out windows) so I made these shelves out of plywood.  Sorry about the quality of the pictures, but the light was bad and I didn’t want to wait for better light.

View from the floor. The selves are just above the sliding glass doors.

The view the kitties will have.

Next thing to build is a little kitty ladder so our little dears can climb up there in comfort.  We tried to get one of the cats to jump up there from the top of her kitty tower, but she didn’t like the odds of missing so just gave up.

and I am thinking carpet.  If you where a cat, you’d like carpet up there.

That’s right folks, if you want to live in comfort, turn yourself into a cat and come live in my house.

If you need me – I’ll be in the shop,
Andrew

Oh those lucky kitties. I’ve always wanted a cat shelf or elevated walkway or some such thing for my cat, but have never had a good place to put one.

  2. You are so thoughtful to those cats! You even painted it blue to match the walls. Of course, if you cover it with carpet, that won’t matter, but I’m sure the cats would love the carpet. I do wish I were a cat at your place. They have no idea how good they have it!

i can tell you right now that if I were a cat I’d love these shelves! You are really considerate to think of them and if they are still hesitant and you don’t do the stairs, maybe a little pulley system and a box could make a kind of elevator. It would sort of spoil the look, but one way or another you’ve got to get the cats up there. Such a cool view!

  11. My husband did that in my children’s room when they were little. We put all their memories up there. Those are wonderful shelves.

I must say, your cats are the most pampered cats I know of. Love it!

I bet your cats love it in there! It’s a good way to keep them from being tempted to go outside too. They get a sense of the outdoors while still being protected indoors.

Oh that looks like a great space for the cats to perch. Well done Andrew.

Kidding aside, the carpet is an excellent idea, not only for comfort but traction.

    • I prefer to think of myself as a contractor and the cats are my clients. Now if I could just get them to write me a check…

How much do they get for an allowance? I like the color you painted the room & shelf. It is very airy and accentuates the open feeling of the wall of windows and doors.

        • Well, cats aren’t as smart as you think. So far I have them convinced that I am using their allowance to buy them toys and cat treats. I love the way the room turned out. I wasn’t sure at first, but it’s worked out great.

Ah, I love this! You’re a big softie! Definitely a carpet I think and little fur rug?Brilliant idea. I’ve seen houses with bookshelves like this around the top of the room and always liked that idea.

    • I’m thinking of little beds up there. I did a few web searches looking at houses with this kind of thing and loved the idea. Mine is very simple, but the room is small so I’ve got a few limits.
