Friday Wisdom – Feeling old?

My father use to ask, “What’s this young kid doing looking out of this old face?”

He never had an answer, but he asked the question a lot.

Lately I’ve started to think about the question more.  Especially since I found out that my doctor was born just after I finished high school.

More wisdom next week,
Andrew

  1. Interesting and refreshing to know so many feel the same…I find myself not so much minding the aging bit but envying others who seem to do so without any self consciousness about it. Sometimes I wonder if I should just remove some of the mirrors in the house, at least the ones that flip to a magnifying option 😀

    • Personally, I am leaning towards removing mirrors under the theory, if you don’t see, it doesn’t exist.

      • Well, I have always liked to think that believing is seeing. Based on that logic, it’s my stinking thinking that’s the problem! So I need to adjust my mindset me thinks. But in the meantime maybe I’ll just run with your theory and remove the damn mirrors. 😉

Hit the sensitive spot here Andrew and seems to be lots of “oldies/wrinklies” blogging these days I remember when teachers were all old, but then I was young so “old” is a comparative term…

  3. I’m always surprised by who is looking back at me in the mirror. The reflection doesn’t seem to match the state of mind! Most of the time… There are days when the reflection actually looks better! Mirror mirror on the wall….

I am glad that more and more people are younger than me. I appreciate this fact because there was a time when life expectancy in Zambia was very low, so I feel blessed/lucky to be at this age. Of course, I still wonder how ‘kids’ can be managers and doctors.

    • I met a police office at the coffee shop the other the day. I thought he looked very young to be in uniform, but then a fellow office came in and offered to buy him a coffee to celebrate 10 years on the force and his promotion to field supervisor.

  6. I can’t complain about being old but I have found it weird to find out I am older than Hugh Jackman and many other stars who in my mind should be much older than myself, I might be older than my doctor I’m not sure, though my medical oncologist is a year younger than I am. Time is such a bizarre thing. I really enjoy your nuggets of wisdom. 😀

  7. I try not to look in the mirror. I just imagine what I look like.

In a similar vein, I’ve often wondered when it was that I started shaving my father’s face in the morning! 🙂

Maybe the kid just was having fun, changing faces for the fun of it.
To confuse those around. We should never lose the child within.:)

I’ve a similar feeling. Seems like the same old me every day, but looking out of a much older face and body. Not quite sure how that happened. Disconcerting to say the least. Especially now with all the doctors the age of Dougie Howser.
