Wednesday Woodworking – Cubes are done

Here they are, the Louis Cubes:

Parquetry finished. The cubes have a cherry veneer boarder.

I was so excited that I couldn’t center the picture.

The lid sits on four pegs inside the box:

Lid off, what's inside?

Lid off, what’s inside?

and one final shot of me trying to show how the box opens:

Me opening the box.

Me opening the box.

Looks like I got a picture of my hand and part of the junk pile that is my bench.

The box isn’t completely done.  It needs a bit of sanding, a little varnish and some felt on the inside.  I think I’ll put felt on the bottom of this box too.

No idea what next week’s project will be other that it will have some wood or wood like substance in it.

If you need me – I’ll be in the shop,

Andrew

Extraordinary, even though I know the lid is flat (I think!!!) my eyes won’t register it is flat and it looks so 3D. Good job…

  12. Hey Andrew, your box is extraordinarily beautiful! I knew you were a craftsman, but now I realize that your’e an artist. Although I guess the distinction there is pretty fuzzy.
You should make big bucks for such work (I mean, if you are so inclined)
I’m sorry I’ve been a bad follower lately.

    • Thanks for your kind words. The difference in the terms is a bit blurry. I’d like to get into selling some of my work, but likely that is later this year before I can start that.

Excellent work, Andrew. Your cubes are really something very special. I have lucite boxes that were passed on to me years ago. They’re beautiful in their simplicity, but the important facet for me is that a great-uncle made them decades ago. I think what you’ve just created is something also very special and I’m sue your family will feel as I do about treasuring this boxl. I really had to study the blocks to be clear it was one box. The optical illusion gave the impression the cubes were different with one photo from the other. Very nice!

    • They do have an optical illusion going. While making it, I’d often have to stop and double check everything. Handmade things do have a value. We have a few things in my home made by family. They are great treasures.

Fantastic! I used work with wood so I know a little bit about what’s involved, but no longer have a shop. Keep it up. And thanks for all the “likes” of my posts. It’s encouraging. Thanks again and Aloha – pjs/

  19. beautiful – what’s IN the box doesn’t really matter, when the lid’s on, the suggested depth makes it full [of potential] even when empty …

The is the first time that I have seen a box open this way. Pretty clever as long as it is not too full on the ends. Your inlay turned out nice. I love the Louis Cube design.

I like that! I was looking for a way to put top’s on children’s small storage boxes (jewelry box for my granddaughter, not sure what to call it for my grandson!) You have made this a great solution! And in addition to the box design, I love the cube top – good job.

(I have no problem with the pictures )

    • For the grandson, either a “Lego” box or a treasure box. The nice thing about this top is that you can do them fast. The lid fits a bit loose so you don’t have to be as precise in machining it to size. Get within an 1/16 to 1/8 and it will look great. The picture doesn’t show it, but mine is slight out of square. So far I am the only one who noticed that.
