Wednesday Woodworking – planter box

Here it is, the prototype for the flower garden’s planter boxes:

The box is 24 by 16 inches and about 15 inches deep.

The box is made from redwood fence boards.  Here in California redwood isn’t too expensive and it will resist rotting.  The box is two feet long and the plan is to make twelve of these.  These will go in the wire cage I’ll be building.

I needed to get the boxes done first so Heather has a place to plant her seedlings.  It’s likely we’ll have flowers before the garden is finished.  This is one of the deeper boxes, some boxes will be shorter than this as not all the plants we’re going to grow need that much root depth.

Well, one down, eleven to build.

If you need me – I’ll be in the shop,
Andrew

You mention a wire cage, am I missing something here? Are you going to cage these boxes? The mind boggles…

Nice job, Andrew. How long does it take you to make one of these?

  6. OMG – that looks like a lot of work… This from the woman who can’t seem to buy a tomato plant at the garden center and replant it in the $50 pot on our deck. Lazy, thy name is AGMA!

Great looking planter box and in a former life (when I wasn’t so lazy) I would have coveted it! 🙂

That’s a lot of boxes to build! Whew! Are you going to drill drain holes or do I detect a slight downward slope toward a full-length slot along the bottom?

Nicer box, Andrew. It appears that the ends of the front side are slightly flared at the top. Is that due to the camera angle, or is it an ever-so-subtle detail?

    • It’s square on the ends. The camera angle is a little funny. Took the picture with my iPhone is a small shop.

Thanks, Andrew. I am a “square box” guy myself and your photo started me thinking about how making the face and back into trapezoidal shapes could be a twist on an old classic.

Either way, your planter boxes look beautiful and redwood is the only way to go. Head down, elbows up.

I look forward to seeing the finished project.

You could make it a Baker’s dozen and have 12 still to go. 😉
