Wednesday Woodworking – Pendant

Last weekend was our marquetry club’s quarterly workshop and this time we set about making some wooden jewelry.  We made this pendant out of small pieces of veneer.  Here is mine:

Parquetry set in a pendant bezel and sealed with polyester resin.

The pendant is about an inch in diameter.  The pattern is small bits of veneer.  Here’s a picture of the bits.  I included the pencil tip so you’d get an idea how small this is:

The bits of wood are about an eighth of an inch.

The clear coat on the top is a UV cured polyester resin.  It’s amazing stuff.  First you put the liquid over the wood and then take it out in to the full sun for three minutes.  Then it’s fully cured and hard.  Then it’s a matter of a little sanding and polishing.  Mine needs a bit more polishing to get it really glossy.

Now I just need a silver chain and Heather has a new pendent to wear.  It was a fun project, but I am not sure if I’ll make any more.  Not sure how many folks out there would wear this kind of thing.

If you need me – I’ll be in the shop,

Andrew

    Andrew,
I would buy several in a heartbeat. I bought a dremel thinking I would do something in the form of pendants. But I love your patterns! If you decide to sell some, please do post!!

It’s gorgeous. I think handmade jewelry is much more interesting than the store-bought kind (though, of course, much of that is handmade, but you know what I mean). Do you have to wear magnifying glasses to work on such small pieces?

    • I think this one turned out nice. This project didn’t require magnifiers, but on some other projects I do use magnifiers. If I did this one again, I’d like use my magnifier light.

This is beautiful! I certainly would wear it, a lot. Reminds me of a maple leaf, or part of a quilt pattern. I’m jealous of Heather having a hubby who can makes such things. I’ve no doubt you could sell items like this on Etsy.

I can see a lot of meticulous work in this pendant, from cutting the pieces to putting them in place. It takes good eyes and nimble fingers.
    Well done,

Beautiful, Andrew! Reminds me of a heart pendant my maternal grandfather made for me when I was a child. He worked as a wood pattern maker. It looks similar to yours in varying shades. He also made me a gorgeous jewelry box using different colors of wood and added my initials on the front. I treasure them both!

I would expect something hand made and wooden would be very popular Andrew. You’ve made a beautiful job of it.
