No Post Week Due to Snow

This is one of those weeks when life has just gotten too much and I am not going to write.  Instead, I am going to pop some pop corn, make herb tea and watch Midsomer Murder with Heather.

You see the weekend started out fine as we were going to take this causal drive over to Reno to celebrate our grandson’s graduation.  You know, a leisurely drive with frequent stops and maybe a nice picnic at Donner Summit with a little walk through the forest.  This time of year in California can be so nice.  Warm temps, clear skies and the world still green from the spring rains.

Yes, I wish we had that trip.

What we got instead was rain, lunch in the car and running the car heater.  Then just when we thought we’d be fine, I realized that the rain looked a bit white.  We noticed the trees looking white.  The the road started looking funny. Some thing like this:

What is this white stuff and why is it on my road?

What is this white stuff and why is it on my road?

At other times these signs said, "Ice and Snow, take it slow."

At other times these signs said, “Ice and Snow, take it slow.”

We counted four car accidents – one spinout on the road, three off the road with one on its side with Highway Patrol officers converging.  It was shortly after this that the road was closed and snow plows whizzed by.  Snow is a concept I don’t get and we had 30 minutes trapped on highway 80 to contemplate it.  The whole time my brain is saying, “It’s May, why is it snowing? Yes, I know it’s possible, but why is it snowing?”

The normal five hour leisurely drive turned into a seven hour ordeal that we’re still recovering from.

and yes the trip back wasn’t as bad. Well at least the snow didn’t stick to the road and it only rained.

Till next week,
Andrew

I had no idea there’d been such a storm! I think you’re right to keep quiet and recover! I do hope the graduation was a happy occasion, which I’m sure it was!

    • The graduation dinner was great and good to see all the family. Don’t think the storm made much impact on the news – just on those of us stuck in the snow.

The clouds get hung up in the mountains and it is at a high altitude there. It is raining in Reno today.

We had the same experience at the Grand Canyon a few weeks ago. The Canyon was so socked in with clouds and rain that we couldn’t see it. So we drove east, and the rain turned to snow. Slow going for a few hours after that…

    • While I was stuck on the pass part of my brain kept asking, “Where’s global warming when you needed?” 😉

Same here! Spring was at least 3 weeks early here in Alberta and my plants didn’t listen to me when I told them it was too early to be up. In the past week, we’ve had three heavy frosts and snow. We went from ‘global warming’ to ‘global cooling’ in just a week!

But you needed the moisture, correct? Or do you not live in that part of the state? Anyway, sue the weatherman. Being off by a few hours is not acceptable.

  10. I didn’t even know it snowed up there this weekend. Sunny, pleasant, blue skies down here in SoCal.

    Not that I’m bragging.

  11. We saw the weather warnings as we drove north. An attention-getter in May, for sure.

    • We did check the weather reports before heading out. They showed a change of rain after 4:00 pm, so we thought to get through the pass by 12:00. The storm came in earlier and stronger than predicted. Looking at the news reports, it seems like it even caught the CHP and CalTrans by surprise.

sounds like our weather here in Canada, beautiful and warm one day, cold and snowy the next, although I must admit we haven’t seen snow for at least a month

It’s just not worth the risks of travelling on day like that!

    • The other weird thing was that we checked the forecast and it clearly showed clear traveling for that time. By the time we got into it, it was too late to turn back.
