Well, we’re here in England, in a nice country hotel after stuffing ourselves with cheese and wine in the little restaurant downstairs. We’ve just been through two days of wedding celebrations for Heather’s sister. I have to tell you these Brits know how to eat and don’t seem to stop. Ever.
After two days of what seemed like either eating or waiting to eat we decided that all we needed for dinner was a light snack or perhaps a small bowl of soup. The hotel staff seemed a bit confused when we asked for something light. Finally we suggested that some cheese and crackers would do.
So they brought out the wine list and the desert menu. I am still trying to figure out why cheese is on the desert menu, but we ended up with what we wanted – a bit of cheese and a few crackers (well very few crackers, I think it was five). The wine was a bonus and so was the cappuccino and the sorbet.
I was impressed that the waiter not only knew my accent was from America, but could narrow it down to California. We did return the complement and correctly noted that the waiter was Italian, based on his accent. No idea why an Italian waiter decided to work at a English country hotel.
That’s the first report from this green and pleasant land. A full report on the wedding and our travels after I wake up from this weekend’s food coma.

I’d never thought of England as a country where people eat often. I’ve been under the impression that they were light eaters.

That might be true in big cities, but out here in the country, meal time means big plates.

You know – I was just thinking that it’s been too long (2002) since I’ve visited the UK (other than Northern Ireland which really doesn’t count since other than using the Pound, it’s essentially Ireland) And there you are!! It must be a sign!
I’m going to be watching the 2nd season of Poldark on PBS and that will have me yearning to visit Cornwall, my ancestral homeland (5% of it!)
Sounds like you’re having a glorious time Andrew and doing what everybody should do when they travel… Learning about the local culture through food and beverage! Cheese for dessert is the thing to do in Europe and is actually catching on over here. I see it more frequently on US menus.
Not wild about the white & black pudding or the beans, but other than that, the full English is fabulous! And filling.

Cheese for dessert sounds lovely, I may try that. When we lived in the Midwest, people would serve apples pie with a slice of cheddar on top. Seemed odd until I tried it, then it was brilliant.

OmG – Yorgshire pudding!!!!:) 🙂 plenty of gravy and of course Roasbeef. Ah, but this is something I can not get here at all!!! Might make a “mock” british sunday lunch using Veal! YP, gravy, 2 Veg (at least)….:) 🙂 have a lovely time and a happy wedding.

For a Brit to hear that an American has been beaten by an English menu is hilarious- USA portions are humongous! Sounds like you’re having a great introduction to our little old country. Hope the weather holds up. (Remember- we Brits are obsessed by the weather). 😊😊

So far the weather has be fine – warm and sunny. Had a clear day for the wedding, but now the skies look cloudy. I do seem to hear a lot about the weather. 😉

So glad you’re having a grand time in England. I’d love to know where you are. I went to school in Surrey and toured extensively when I was doing music tours.
I miss the place terribly including the real cheeses. There are over 700 named cheeses produced in the UK and I made an effort to try all of them (I think I only made it to 100 or so).

Our board only had 5 cheeses, but they were all good. We’re up in the Malvern Hills area.

I should have added, that while we’ve eaten a lot, it’s all been very good. I think I am up to three full breakfasts so far. Today we had traditional roast beef for Sunday dinner, complete with the best Yorkshire pudding I’ve had in years.
