Wednesday Art Project – Mandala

Several years ago Heather did an art project for church that I helped with. It is two large mandala.  This is a  representation of the cycle of life.  Heather came up with the basic concept, did pencil drawings and sewed about half the panels.  Other folk at church did the other panels.  I and another guy built the wooden frames.  Each frame is three feet by three feet creating a nine by nine square.  With the two sides there are 18 frame and panels.

These two displays were rehung for the month of September.

Have you ever seen the Buddhist ones which are patterns rather than pictures? Every year they make one with coloured sand, but so far, they haven’t managed to put it up on the wall like yours!

    • I’ve seen pictures of those. When Heather was researching this project she went to the library and checked out a number of books on mandalas. She decided on a pictorial mandala as it told the story she wanted to tell.

At first glance I thought they were stained glass windows. Remarkable work! The church should leave them right where they are.

These are beautiful, Andrew – well done to you both and great they are out on display again. What’s normally hanging in this space as these look so perfect there?

    • There is nothing that normally hangs there. Several times a year a new art installation is done. We’ve have a number of different hangings up there over the years. We have a visuals team who work with our pastor to create new things to coordinate with the pastor’s sermon series.

  12. These are really lovely! They transform the space, bringing the eye down to the human, while simultaneously up toward the celestial. And they function asthetically as windows.

Your church sure doesn’t fool around when it comes to making things! I wonder what else it could make? I bet if you put your minds to it, you could make just about anything.

    Hmm…
