Walk in the Rain

A rare rainy weekend for us.  Not a lot of rain, but when you haven’t seen it in months, it’s welcome.  The weather forecast says it’s going to get warmer around here and the rain isn’t coming back for a while.  Still, rain or not, life goes on and yesterday we had planned to go hiking in the hills.

It’s been awhile since we’ve been hiking, so rather than cancel, we just threw the rain coats in and went off to witness this thing where water falls from the sky.

We went up to Windy Hill for a hike along The Lost Trail.  Don’t know why they named it the lost trail, as we found it just fine.  By the way, if you follow the link to see the preserve’s web site you’ll see several pictures down the bottom of the page showing green grass and a field of flowers.  This is false advertising as this represents about five days in spring during wet years.  Most of the time it looks like the picture at the top, golden grass, warm winds and lots of dog walkers.

Here are a few pictures of what our walk looked like:

Cloud flowing over ridge.

Here you can see cloud we walked through.  It was dripping wet most of the trail, but not very cold.

Heather on the trail.

Here’s Heather in her wet weather gear.  And that’s a sincere smile – not forced for the picture.  She actually likes this kind of hiking. Well, except for the muddy shoes and pants we came home in.

Some of the trail goes through woodland bits with ferns, vines, green, and muddy trails.  The picture is a little blurry because the wind was up (it’s called Windy Hill for a reason) and holding the camera still wasn’t easy.

It was a great day to be out and a nice way to breath in.

Now it’s back to working on my novel and a new poetry project.

Till next week,
Andrew

  1. Lovely. I got quite a few likes on facebook yesterday when I wrote: You know you’re a Californian when water is hitting your car and it takes you a while to remember how to work your windshield wipers. Then ten seconds later you turn them back off anyway.

  2. I love when the clouds sit on the earth like that which you’ve photographed so well, a very common sight here on the island. Wish we had those trails and forests also! Something I miss about Maine and the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Yes, the cool wind and rain have finally reached me here in blazing Arkansas as well. The funny thing is that I really tired of the non-stop rain and wind when I lived in Glasgow (the old joke is that Scotland has 2 seasons… June and Winter).
Now it’s finally feeling Autumnal, time for spooky things and pumpkin quiche.

  4. What a gorgeous hike. Hopefully, with winter coming, you’ll have more rainy days. Me, I hiked around the Library of Congress and DC over the weekend. That too was fun!

It’s very similar to our Priest Point Park, which would be just as muddy.

A day out in that kind of weather has saved you the expense of a holiday in Scotland.

As long as it wasn’t too cold, that would be a fun hike. Everything smells so good when it rains!

We are on a short trip to Colorado and it has been all sunshine. Today we got the California wind and it blew off most of the aspen leaves. I’m glad we got here ahead of the wind and missed the storm. I am also grateful for the much needed rain!
