Friday Wisdom – Praying for Potatoes

“If you pray for potatoes, better reach for a hoe.”

This was some thing that Hellen – a sponsor for the Alateen group I was part of way back in my teens when I could eat two large pizzas in one sitting – would often say on the subject of prayer.  Then she’d launch into a long explanation on why prayer without action was useless.

    I agree. Having a prayer and expecting something outside you to make it happen is silly. I’m a Buddhist. We call it the law of cause and effect. Christians say: you reap what you sow. Bottom line – prayer without action is like praying and put out your hands and saying, “Where’s my cookies?” and nothing is there and saying, “I guess it’s the lord’s will.”

      Sadly too many people treat God like an ATM, “give me.” Prayer is a basis for action and the start of the conversation on how to change.

        So right. People when they have a problem and then hold out their hand waiting for their cookie. Effects in your life come from an action. The law of cause and effect or even, you reap what you sow. If you want a different future than what you have you have to work for it. You need to find the wisdom of past mistakes and learn from it. I don’t understand why people think their is a loving, emotional thing out their that plans their life. That’s ridiculous. Yes, people have the right to believe what they wasn’t but it doesn’t make it any less absurd. Because it this entity is out there it’s an alien. People need the crutch of thinking something loves them and their life isn’t their fault. It’s God’s will. But they can believe in it as long as they don’t try to force their beliefs on me. Faith needs to be personaland kept personal. Your last sentence is so right. Let it open up dialogue on HOW to change.
