It’s been a busy week and today I went to the opera (yes, opera) so no writing tonight. Instead here are some pictures of the flooding near my office. This is the Los Gatos Creek Trail that I often get to walk at lunch time. Normally this is a lazy creek about nine feet wide and maybe three to five feet deep. Here’s what it looked like last week:
I took the detour. You’ll see why in the next picture.
The trail is wide to accommodate both walkers and bicycles. This part of the trail is prone to flooding in winter – the signs aren’t lying.
Here’s a picture of the trail and creek from a high spot on the detour (I’m about ten feet above the water here):
The trail is in foreground – up to the chain link fence. I’d guess it’s under five feet of water here.
At this stage the creek river is about 50 feet wide and I’d guess a good 20 feet deep in the middle. Given that there’s more rain due tomorrow, I won’t be walking this part of the trail until maybe April or May.

We got all of that and more in some places yesterday. A facebook friend asked for the dimensions for an ark – I offered to help him build it.

This shot was taken after the creek had receded by about 10 feet. I didn’t go out there when the waters were rising.

Which opera did you see ?
My favorite is”Aida” by Verdi.
The first time I saw it was at the Baths of Carricula in Rome but I didn’t fully understand it until I saw a production in Cincinnati that included subtitles.

It’s a new one, “Silent Night” based on the 1914 WWI Christmas Eve truce. I don’t normally go to opera, but my wife is a big fan. Our local company normally does one ‘experimental,’ or newly written work each season. I like to see those. “Silent Night” is wonderful. Sung in three languages with a very interesting set design. I loved it.

The whole state’s a bit soggy this week. This morning was a very wet drive to the office. I wasn’t so sure about parking the car in the underground garage today though.

Did you know I lived in Boulder Creek before moving to Mexico? I remember I had talked about Los Gatos with someone but didn’t remember it being you. I used to show my work in the Los Gatos Gallery..Stay dry, Andrew!!!

Yes, I recall you mentioning that before. My office is next to the creek not far from Lark Ave were these pictures were taken. Boulder Creek have been hit bad this year. 17 is down to two lanes, Hwy 9 is closed, Skyline is washed out near Castle Rock – it’s a mess up there. If it gets any worse, I’m coming down to Mexico.

My home is. It would take a lot to flood the house. Even the office is on ground high enough to survive most of what can get thrown at us.
