This last weekend was marquetry weekend and I got the next step done on my tissue box. The marquetry is on and the next step is a bit of sanding and some finish.
Each side has a turtle.
The top is just plain. The wood is a walnut burl.
Just a simple project this week. With the weather turning sunny, my next project will likely involve heavy lifting.

Wow…very impressive work! Love it! We have a special love for turtles in our household…as we have a pet turtle. You should really consider selling your pieces, maybe online? 🙂

I rarely make enough of these to go through the work to sell. I could never sell them at any kind of a profit. Someday I might.

No, I never make enough to sell. If I make more than one piece a month I’ve made a lot for me.

Gotcha. Maybe if your church has a fundraiser or something you could have a couple things to offer. That is if they actually accumulate for you. 🙂 And I’m not joking about seeing kittie photos. Where are the kitties?! We want kitties!!

I have donated a few items to silent auctions at the church. I think they’ve made something $120 off my work. Kitties, okay, okay, kitties.

I too love marquetry but I have to work with pre-glued vaneers.
I badly need a good chessboard to go with my Isle of Lewis chess set. That would be one heck of a project.
What’s the most complicated piece you’ve ever fine ?

The design is based on a Hawaiian petroglyph. I love the simple pattern. I’ve done a couple of marquetry projects with pre-glued. I’ve do a few more complicated pieces – a couple that were designed to go on curved surfaces. That’s a pain to glue down. I’ve done a couple of chess boards, but it’s been awhile.

I’m working on a wall clock right now, using birch I had left over from a bookshelf I built.

Finally, we’ve had a week of sun and things are drying out a bit. There’s a small rain storm predicted for the weekend, but I doubt it will amount to much.

You call it simple…but I’m sure marquetry isn’t a simple art. I really admire the beauty in this piece. Maybe it’s my fondness for turtles. 🙂

a wipe-on polyurethane. Since this is likely to be in a bathroom it needs to be a bit water proof.

It will take a little while to build up the finish, but plan to have it done this month.
