Wednesday Woodworking – Designing a Desk at my Desk

I have an unheated workshop so in January it’s too cold to work out there much.  Instead I’ve been indoors planning projects for the coming year.  My desk and office area are in need of an upgrade and that’s the first project I am planning.  I do my drawings using SketchUp.  I am not an expert with the software, but know enough to get a reasonable set of working plans from it.  Then I take the plans to the shop and likely will change most things as I build.  Well here it is the rough drawing for my new desk and computer station:

I need lots of shelves to hold books and junk.

Next on the project planning list is a new pantry cabinet and new shelves and cabinets for the laundry room.  Two of the cats sleep in the laundry room, so, yeah, I’m designing some new kitty beds.

If you need me, I’ll be virtually woodworking at the computer,

Andrew

  1. Haha making a virtual desk, meanwhile your sotting at a desk.

  2. Aww, kitty beds! Our hamster died, so a kitten is being pondered. That or chickens…

  3. Very cool. I’ve never used SketchUp – I use a 2D drafting program called DraftSight, which takes my ancient AutoCAD keyboard commands. SketchUp looks interesting, though – sometimes it would be really nice to have a 3D drawing of my projects. Is it expensive?

    • It’s a great program. I use the free version which is more than enough for my basic skills. There is a pro version if you need the fancy stuff. I haven’t used AutoCAD in 20 years. About 10 years ago, I worked for a game company and they used Maya (autodesk’s 3D system), but that’s way out of my budget. I stumbled onto SketchUp shortly after that job and have been using it since. Get it, you’ll love it.

  5. Virtual woodworking might not be as fun as real woodworking, but there’s less sawdust. 😉

  6. You are good with SketchUp. I’ve seen 8th graders do better than I–but not better than you.

  9. You have a lot in common with gardeners, who use the cold weather to peruse garden catalogues and plan next spring’s garden.
