Friday Wisdom – Embezzlement

My father was a CPA and specialized in auditing. He was often hired by companies who were trying to figure out who was stealing from the company.  The first thing father always asked for was a list of people’s vacations over the last year.  He told me that most often the embezzler was the person who never took a vacation and seemed like the most loyal and hardest working person in the company.  If this person went on vacation and gave up control they might be exposed.  I was amazed how often this theory proved true.

In my life, I’ve done my best to show employers that I am not an embezzler by being lazy, disloyal, and frequently on vacation.

More wisdom next week,

Andrew

If experts at sniffing out embezzlers, like your father, know embezzlers normally are the most diligent employees and never take vacations, a crafty embezzler should hide himself by taking lots of vacations and slacking off wherever possible.

  4. Your father was a very smart man! And clearly he passed his smarts on to his son – you have an excellent work strategy. How selfless of you to reassure your employers like that! 😉

    Great advice, Andrew!
You know, we knew a guy who was director of a big art museum in Nebraska (yes, there are such things in Nebraska). He was a very elegant, dignified man, friendly but a little intimidating. A few years later we heard he was arrested for embezzlement and had stolen nearly a million dollars over the course of several years. He was a hard worker who never took a vacation. Hmm. 🤔
