This week I’m working on the marquetry for my freeform box. This tulip is knife cut using dyed veneers. This will go on the underside of the lid. The top will get a rose – I’ll start that this weekend.
Here I am cutting out the tulip with my scalpel.
The final tulip before it’s glued down.
That’s it for the woodworking this week
If you need me – I’ll be in the shop,

Here’s a secret – a lot of marquetry and quilting patterns are the same. I have done those tulips in a quilt I did years ago.

This kind of project would require far more patience than I have, but I’m enjoying your posts on it. (It’s much more fun when somebody else does it.) I’m looking forward to seeing the next update! 🙂

Hopefully, I’ll have the rose on the front done by next week. and it requires a large bucket of patience.

It’s fun to see part of the method used to create the eventual design. It’s going to be beautiful!

I took more pictures of the process that I intend to use in a longer blog post on making this box.

Maybe I wasn’t paying attention before, but is that interesting diagonal striation from the wood or from a special staining technique? I like it, and it sure shows off the tulip.

It’s the wood veneer – at this stage there is no finish applied. This veneer is rotatory cut from a log which gives it a chatoyance effect depending on the angle of the viewer. The camera angle here highlights this lighting effect.

Is this a gift? It should be!

I haven’t decided what I’ll do with it when I’m done. Most likely a gift.

I like your idea of having a rose on one side and a tulip on the other.
