Wednesday Woodworking – Finished Marquetry Clock

Here it is – another project finished:

Marquetry clock – marquetry on white oak

This is made from white oak and stands about 10 inches tall.  The marquetry is cut into a piece of white oak veneer.  I used a combination of knife cutting and scroll saw work to make the flowers.  I got the pattern from my marquetry club and I made a couple of changes – I added the “ground” and moved the clock from the center to be a bit off-center.

I’ll say that this is most difficult piece I’ve attempted so far and it turned out better than I’d hoped.

More marquetry as the month goes on.

    This a a beautiful project! I also savor all of the comments above regarding the clock being placed off center. I, too, love wood — although I have never made anything from it. It wasn’t until I was an adult (having grown up in an era of plastic) that I began to appreciate how strong and durable wood can be. Our house is about a hundred years old, for example, and we have wood floors and wood doors and wood cabinets which have all lasted perfectly well during that period of time. I also like to imagine where the trees grew (and when they first sprouted…) which became the floors, doors, cabinets, etc. in our house. They may have have been growing during the Civil War or even earlier! I have a friend in Toronto who is a woodworker. He has begun making exquisite ukuleles out of a variety of beautiful hardwood — and teaching high school kids how to make them, too, at the school where he works. Hurrah for wood, for woodworking, and for creativity!

    Terrific work Andrew. I love wood and when we first got married we bought a piece from everywhere we visited. My father-in-law was a master wood turner and we have his bowls made from natural Irish woods and even lamps, around the house. So much warmer than metals and ceramics.

      Sometimes I need to leave a comment (which often involves logging or re-logging in to my WP account) before I can “like” a post. I am guessing — in my case — this is due to the age of my computer and/or browser…

    I’m trying to imagine the process of getting all the pieces of the design set into the veneer. Perfect fit, proper depth, etc. Intricate work. Beautiful result.
