Wednesday – Cattery

This last week we had the fence company come out and build a cattery so our kitties can have some outside time. We don’t let them just go outside here because there are predators here that would eat our little ones.

But the kitties really would like to be outside.

So we had this built:

The new cattery.

It’s 10 x 20 feet and eight feet high. We added rocks and edging around the bottom so the cats can’t wiggle out that way. There’s a patch of grass and a small tree along with the concrete area.

We’ll be adding some climbing structures and this is the first one:

First feature – a dead tree to climb up.

We still need to have the door to the house replaced with one that we can add a kitty door. Right now we have to let them in and out so they only get an hour or so at a time.

Spotty Kitty was the first cat to brave the new play area:

The first brave kitty to come out and check it out.

We have more work to do but so far the cats are happy with their new cattery.

  2. That’s so kind of you. Is cattery a real word, or your invention? I’d never heard of such a thing.

That’s a great idea, Andrew. As we slowly improve our property, the notion of redoing our deck has come up. We had redone the deck at our house up north using a material that looks like wood but is much more durable. We want to do the same here and have a roof and screen it in. When that happens, our cats will be able to venture outside like your cats.

  4. A marvelous cattery! I was squinting at the photo to try to figure out whether it had a roof. I’m assuming so, if you have eagles in the area. I’m sure your kitties will be thrilled once they get used to it.

  5. It warms my heart to see you do this. I am an avid “Cat Lady” and have been so all my life. Coming from the Chicago area, I never allowed my kitties out. I had seen too many meet their early end by man and nature to do that. Now that I live in rural Nova Scotia, there are still the dangers of cars, animals (we hear the coyotes in the woods at night), and yes – people too. I read that the average lifespan of an outdoor cat is about 2-5 years compared to an indoor cat’s average life of 10-15 years. It is disheartening to see people on our local Facebook pages looking for lost pets or mourning over those hit by a car. My heart couldn’t take that knowing I could have prevented it.
Your outdoor ‘catio’ is PURR-FECT for them! They will love it and love you more for making it for them. Awesome! ❤

    • Where we lived in San Jose, it was reasonably safe to let a cat outside, but here in Reno, there are too many things that would snack on a cat. We’re having fun setting this up and the cats love being in their new space.

Excellent idea. Do you ever have eagles or other raptors fly over? Perhaps they would appreciate some cover to hide under ?

    • We do get raptors here so we’re planning on doing something. There’s a lot more to put in this area for them. We’re planning on growing a vine and putting some structures out there they can sleep on and hide under.

That’s a great structure, Andrew. With a cat flap on your door, they’ll be able to use it like a revolving door between them.
