Wednesday Working – Blue Sky

Yeah, it’s really Thursday, but yesterday the smoke finally clear and I’ve been outside working. The smoke has been thick here for about a month due to different fires in California, but mostly it’s been the Dixie fire that’s been dumping smoke here in Reno (Nevada, you’d think the Californias could manage to keep the smoke in their state). This week a new fire, the Caldor fire started and it looks like that the winds are shifting and we’ll start getting smoke from that tomorrow.

sigh.

A strange sight – the sky without smoke. Look there are hills back there. Haven’t seen those in a month.

Early in the week, there was one day when the smoke wasn’t at the hazardous level and I managed to get out there with my N-95 mask and finish the shed. Built the doors and put in the anchor bolts.

Shed with the doors installed and closed.

Didn’t get a picture of the bolts but here’s the tool that did the job:

My hammer drill. I love it, but don’t get to use it much. If you need holes drilled in concrete, call me.

and I even moved a few things over to this shed from our other garden shed:

The first two items in the new shed.

Most of my work this week has been in my workshop shed where mudding and taping is still going on:

Lots of mud. Just one big seam left todo and then it’s on to the texturing, painting, flooring, moving the tools in … Yup should be done with in a year or so.

I end up having to move a lot stuff around to position the ladder for the ceiling work so I’ve tried to get as much on wheels as possible, like my main work table:

The junk cart/work table. It has wheels and three bundles of insulation. Yes, that’s a fire extinguisher – those who’ve worked in my labs understand why I have one.

Likely, I won’t be getting much work done next week due to the smoke.

If you need me, I’ll be out shopping for a giant air purifier.

  1. Your shed and workshop look great, and I’m glad you got a brief respite from the smoke. Hoping for rain, for you and for us…

  2. Oh, how I hope for relief from all of that smoke for you westerners. Has to be frustrating not to mention unhealthy. But hey, on the bright side…the shed is looking good (even if it takes a year to complete).

I won’t claim the smoke in Colorado is as bad as Nevada but maybe we’re a close second. We also had a clear day with lower temps this week. I had to look twice to realize the Rockies had returned to our view to the west. Like you, it seems like it’s been a month or more since the last blue skies.

    • From all the reports I’ve seen you guys still got more than your share of the smoke. Hopefully this good weather and low smoke will hold on for at least one more day.

  4. We got a break too. Rain, hail, 30 degree temp drop, snow on the peaks. Almost-blue skies today. I’m not building any sheds. Just happy to see the sun and lower temps.

  5. Be glad you moved. PG&E is starting brown outs–blamed on the fires.

Good work with your storage area!

    • NV energy has been able to keep up, but has put out a few warnings that electricity might get shutdown in areas close to fires or in a couple of known high wind areas.

The sheds are doing great and I’m looking forward to moving my bench and tools in.

You’ve done really well there. Just like John Wayne in “The Fighting CBs”, construction under fire.
