Big mile stone this week: The gabion wall is completed.
Here it is:

I made the baskets and Heather filled them with rock. These create a new planting bed at the base of our hill. We were at the nursery last week and bought a couple of plants for the space. We hoping to get a basic set of plants in this fall. The area was covered in rock and we used that rock to fill the gabion baskets which create a small retaining wall about two feet high.
I also mowed the lawn this week:

I still find it strange that we have lawn in the desert and yes, I mow the lawn most weeks, but rarely take pictures of it.
That’s it for this week, next week I’m starting on building a table so if you need me, I’ll be in the shop.
I love the look of your wonderfully creative fence! Nicely done, Andrew.

Was the curving stone wall at the bottom already there or did you build that as well.? Beautiful stone and stonework.

A few years ago we had a landscape company design and build new terracing for the hill which included the curved wall. The area we did the gabion wall was originally just covered with stone until we had time to put in a planting bed.

Wow, it’s beautiful! What a lot of work, but it must be so satisfying to glance out the window and have “concrete” evidence of the success of your labours. 🙂

There is a lot of evidence up there …

It was a lot of work. The real payoff comes when we get the plants in.

Lawn? You have a lawn?

Strange I know, but my wife likes lawn so we have some. It’s a lot of work to keep it looking nice.

Great job. Looks beautiful, but WAIT, did you say your wife carried the rocks? Good exercise!

Yes, she did. The rock was already on the hill and she just moved it into the baskets. Still a lot of work.

Yes, a lot of work. Now, you can enjoy your backyard. Have a few last summer dinners outside before winter hits us.

That wall looks like a ton of work — literally and figuratively.

Well, it was a lot of rock so it could have been a ton or so that we shifted.
