I finally finished the deck frame:

I still need to do a little clean up around the site, but next will be installing the deckboards:

This is composite decking and will go on top of the frame. Here’s a close up:

Each board is about six inches wide and about 12 feet long — some are 16 feet long. They are heavy. Really, really heavy … I mean back injuring heavy. I carried all this from the driveway to the backyard. It took two hours to move and my back hurts — really, really hurts.
Well, it did a couple of days ago, but after some ice, heat, rest and ibuprofen things are getting better. Just in time for Heather and I to go on vacation. I’ll have pictures when we get back and I’ll have about a month of good weather left to finish this deck. It should be finished just in time for the winter snow.
Well that’s it for this week, if you need me I’m packing my clothes and checking the weather forecast.
Hope you had a good time. Glad your back is better. Take care.

Hi Andrew, you must try and get some help moving these boards. You don’t want to damage your back. I hope you are having a wonderful holiday.

I love that composite decking – it looks beautiful and I love its durability and weather-resistance. Now, if only it wasn’t so HEAVY!!!
I hope you had a wonderful (pain-free) vacation! 🙂

Enjoy your vacation. The deck will be waiting for you and your back. On the bright side, you won’t have kids asking, “are we there yet?”

Yup, no kids saying that, just me thinking that … 😉

Those deck boards look lighter than they are, and I know from first-hand experience. We just replaced a ton of pasture fencing with similar 16′ boards. They’re not composite which means yours are even heavier. I don’t envy you having to move them, but at least the finish work is in sight.

Yes, at first glance it looked easy to pickup and then my back said, “wow, that’s heavy.”

Oh, I am sorry you are hurting. Take a good rest and enjoy your time off. Please be careful when you start working on it again. It isn’t worth crippling yourself. I hope you have a lovely vacation. 🙂
