I still haven’t managed to motivate myself to do much writing this year. Next week I have a sermon to write for church, so I guess I’ll be doing some writing for that.
But mostly the weather here has become warm, the snow is melted and next week we’re in for a heatwave. That means I’m out in the garden starting my spring projects including this:

and this:

I’m tearing out a raised planter bed I made about five years ago. It’s kind of falling apart and had tree roots growing up in it so it’s time to replace it. We’ve also learned that here you need deeper raised bed boxes for the kinds of veggies we like to grow. Once the demolition is done and the area cleaned out, I’ll be building a new planting box for this area. It will be deeper and wider.
In the shop I finished a cutting a batch of 15 rabbit napkin rings — well actually the pattern calls these Easter Egg holders, but I’m going to use them for napkin rings:

I’m thinking I’ll get some more wood and making a few more so I have three sets of eight. The plan is to keep a few for our table and sell the rest at the church’s quilt sale this fall. The rabbits pictured here still need some sanding and some kind of finish.
That’s it for this week — if you need me, I’ll either be writing or out back avoiding writing by building a planter box.
The napkin rings look good. I am sure you will have a good time creating. Regards, Lakshmi

It looks like you’re going to be busy for a while! Do you repurpose the wood from the old planter box after you’ve taken it out? I always wanted a planter box but I read they need to be quite deep for potatoes and I’m in a condo with just a balcony so drainage is an issue. Maybe I’ll try growing something in a 5 gallon pail like some wildflowers to attract pollinators.

Sadly the old wood was too rotten to use again, but I do have some salvaged wood from an old deck that I’m using for the new planter box. I’ve grown potatoes in boxes that are about 15 inches deep and that worked fine, but I’ve got lots of areas where drainage isn’t an issue.

The rabbits are so cute! They certainly seem like a more relaxing and enjoyable project than all your outdoor work. 😉

and a lot less heavy lifting.

Such pretty rabbits. Will you leave them plain or paint them?

That depends on what they look like after I sand them. Right now I’m thinking of doing a clear coat so you can see the wood.

Happy Spring, Andrew. My partner Keith has started his garden stuff, too. He is already planting inside and he has a growing station in our basement complete with heat mats and growing lights to help things along. He can’t wait until it is warm for good. Our snow just finished melting yesterday (the 5-ft drifts were all gone) and we got some snow and ice overnight. Not yet, I suppose, but soon. 🙂
Have a great week.

I think we’ll be starting our seeds indoors next week and planting them out in mid to late May.

Being nosey about other people’s gardens, what is that cage for?

That’s a catio for my cats. They aren’t allowed outside because we have coyotes and hawks in the area, the cage gives them a little safe outside time.

Ah I see. In Perth western australia cats are not allowed outside to protect the wild life!

It’s good to see you, my friend! Life has been more than crazy for me–but God is good. The rabbit napkin rings are precious and awesome! Here’s to the building of a planter box! Prayers and blessings!
