I’m still very busy with a poetry seminar and mostly not doing much blogging at the moment. I thought I’d just pop in to post one of the poems I’ve been working on. I might get back to more regular blogging next week.
January Birthday
My friend had his birthday in August.
He had parties in the park with ice cream,
cake and rolling down the grassy bank.
His presents where toys, airplane models and bubbles.
My birthday came in January.
I had a party once, in the rain.
There was cake, and pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey.
It was too close to Christmas.
I got a coloring book, a new coat and socks from an aunt.
That’s so very sad. 😦 I think that’s a situation where half birthdays should be observed as well. 🙂

I like your poem. 🙂 I had the opposite problem: My birthday is in August, which is harvest month in the prairies. I always had a nice birthday cake and thoughtful presents, but people in our rural area were usually too busy to make time for birthday parties.

Seems like where you grew up has a lot do with what party you might or might not get.

Nice. My son’s birthday in October and there were school vacations in that month and used to be quite irritated that he could not give chocolates to his classmates and have fun together.

I had friends with summer vacations who had trouble finding kids to go to their parties because of vacations. Not fun.

Ah, the (bad) luck of the draw, Andrew.

I feel your pain, Andrew. My birthday is close to the end of school, graduations, Memorial Day, bridal showers, and weddings. I’ve had no birthday party since I was 14. Hey, maybe we should celebrate half birthdays instead!

That sounds like a great idea. or maybe we just celebrate everybody’s birthday on August 14 and have one big nation wild blow out for everybody. 😉
