Wednesday Working – Rafters

We’ve been having weird weather around here. Most days have been hot, in the 90s but we had some rain last week. Today is comparatively cold, just in the 70s with rain predicted on Thursday. Weird. Still I’ve managed a couple of days this week to work on the greenhouse:

This week it’s the roof I started on. Here you see the gable ends and some of the rafters. Here’s a close up of that thing in the back:

Yup, it’s a fan. I wish I was making more progress on this. Three things slow me down, the weather, I’m old and only work four hours a day and there are lots of parts to put together. I mean lots of boards, bolts, nuts, washers, screws and brackets.

There is a fourth thing that slow me down this week — a missing part. Guess I didn’t do a good enough inventory of parts when I got this kit but last week I wanted to start on the ridge bean and needed bracket #2085. The instruction manual said there should be two. I spent an hour going through all the boxes and I couldn’t find it so I called the kit company’s customer service line. They didn’t question how the part became missing and just agreed to send me a new one — free of charge. I got it two days later and was back in the building business.

The way this thing is put together, one missing part can stop the whole build process. There’s not much you can build. Lesson learned, do a really detailed inventory before starting to build. Given the hundreds of parts here, my guess is that would have taken a couple of old man work days to get done.

Well that’s it for this week. If you need me, I’m looking for bolt #10987 … I need 16 for the next step.

The greenhouse is looking so good. It is so satisfying when we can do what we want to do in spite of setbacks. Regards, Lakshmi

  4. Hurrah, rafters! This is going to be a good looking greenhouse, isn’t it, if you find all the bolts. . .
