On announcing to my father that I was going to get a BA in English, he replied:
“Well, an English Major is better than being a Canadian Captain.”
Thanks dad.
More wisdom next week,
Andrew

Wise words. ‘Captain’ means so many different things, depending upon the service. On my daughter’s several ships, the Captain may or may not (and usually not) be a Captain in rank, despite being Captain in name.

My father served in the Amy. Sadly the joke only works with ground pounders…

My Dad was equally helpful with his career advice. He said “You’re a clever lad. Be a judge.”

I don’t want to sound ignorant, but what is a Canadian Captain?

Think army officer ranks. Lt., Captain, Major…

Andrew…My Dad died when I was 3….I’m 66 now. I have only a precious few memories of him ( yes a two year old can remember ). Thank you so very much for sharing some of your Dad memories with all of us!

From one English major to another, that is hilarious! I think my father said, “Just don’t become self-employed.” Too late! Lol
