Friday Wisdom — Garbage.

I’ve decided to repost some of my old wisdom posts — just because we need it more than ever. Friday is trash day on my street so here’s what I know about garbage:

Murphy’s law of cleanliness: It’s impossible to get one thing clean without getting something else dirty.

I applied for a job as a garbage truck driver. They said there is no training – you just pick it up as you drive along.

Name something that has six wheels and flies? A garbage truck.

Our local trash company is testing a advertising slogan: “Our business stinks, but it’s picking up.”

I’ve been spending hours trying to write a joke about garbage, but everything I come up with is trash.

A grouping of small new garbage cans is know as a litter.

I got stopped by a park ranger who told me I couldn’t just throw trash on the ground, so I pointed to the sign and said, “but the sign here says, Fine for Littering.”

I heard a conversation between two garbage cans. It was all trash talk.

Just read about the new union contract for the garbage collectors – those people are filthy rich.

It just feels like buying garbage bags is throwing money away.

Most of the above jokes are recycled. Some are just garbage.

The garbage man waved and said hello to me this morning – he said he knows all the trash around here.

Did you see the YouTube video of a guy trying to make his garbage smell better by throwing herbs in it? Complete waste of thyme.

Yes, I applied to be a garbage man – I hear the industry is picking up.

and finally, always remember that just because you’re trash doesn’t mean you can’t do great things. It’s called garbage can – not garbage cannot …

Friday Wisdom — First Snow

Here in the high desert we’re getting the first snow of the season. This is very early for us and we expect it won’t last. Still the local ski resorts are making plans to open by Thanksgiving. Here’s what by backyard looked like:

And here are some thoughts about snow:

When I saw the icy road, I could hear it calling, “Want to go for a spin?”

There is a new kind of bicycle for winter, it’s called an icicle.

If you need cash in the winter, just go to the nearest snowbank.

What do snowmen like best about going to school? The snow and tell time.

I put my radio out in the snow – I wanted to listen to some cool music.

The grandkids have been staring through the window ever since it started to snow an hour ago. Guess I’d better let them inside.

What do you give a snowman for breakfast? Frosted Flakes.

I only found one of my snow boots, but that’s okay, there’s only a 50% chance of snow.

What was the penguin doing in the Sahara Desert? It was lost.

Which side of a penguin has the most feathers? The outside.

I tried to be a fortune teller for awhile, but I wasn’t very good. I could only predict really bad storms – turns out I was using a snow globe.

I started writing this joke about snow, but it’s a bit flaky.

The weatherman told me that clouds only produce snow when they can really chill out.

I bought a snow shovel, but I had the heater on in the car and the shovel melted before I got home.

What do snowwomen put over their baby’s crib? A snowmobile.

What is the scientific of a snowman in summer? A puddle.

Wednesday Working – Writing

The placemats I showed you last week sold at our annual church sale and now that the sale is over, I’m shifting to more writing. I’ve mentioned that I’m taking an class in ekphrastic poetry, what I didn’t mention is that it is focused on women artists. Yeah, I’m the only male in the class, strange. I thought I’d pop in today and post another one of the poems I wrote for this class. This one is almost good. Let me know what you think. The poem is in response to Judith Baca’s Thirteen Women in the Volcanic Eruption (warning: the painting depicts nude women). I didn’t try to do any great thinking or reimagining of the original art. Instead this poem is what thoughts entered my mind after viewing the art.

Born of Fire

After Thirteen Women in the Volcanic Eruption by Judith Baca

Women gathered.
Only they knew what was happening.
Was about to happen.
Had already happened.

Rivers of lava
ankle deep
anchoring them to rock
making them part of the mountain.

Creation.
A heart held up.
A heart set beating.
A child’s curiosity set in motion.

Will it fulfill them?
Complete them?
Or send rivers of tears
setting the world ringing with laughter.

Let me know what you think. My next writing task is to write a sermon for church. I’m preaching next Sunday and figure I should put a little thought into what I’m going to say.

That’s it for this week. If you need me, I’m in the library looking up the meaning of eschatology.

Wednesday Working — Placemats

And life goes on. With the cold weather, I’ve been doing more indoor stuff like working on some quilt projects. Like this:

Not the best picture, but this is a 17″x13″ placemat. It’s part of a set of four. There no better stress reliever than to cut big things in to small things and sew them back into big things.

Or you can write poetry. I’ll work on one of those later this week.

If you need me, I’m in the sewing room ignoring the news.
