Wednesday Woodworking – the planer

What do woodworkers do on cold January days when it’s too cold to work in our unheated shops? Yup, we sit in our nice warm homes, in front of a warm computer and research tools to buy.  Then we buy them.  Here’s my first big tool purchase in a long time:

My new addition to the shop.

It’s a surface planer.  This tool mills surfaces flat and parallel to each other.  It will let me start milling my own lumber.  I haven’t had any milling tools and have always had to buy lumber milled to the dimensions I need or close enough that I could sand it to the size I need.  This is one of the two tools I need to be able to mill rough lumber to whatever size I need.  Rough lumber also costs less then then S4S stock I’ve been buying.

This purchase will help me take my woodwork skills up to another level.

and the other tool I need?  Picture of that next week.

If you need me – I’ll be in the shop,

Andrew

Wednesday Woodworking – Designing a Desk at my Desk

I have an unheated workshop so in January it’s too cold to work out there much.  Instead I’ve been indoors planning projects for the coming year.  My desk and office area are in need of an upgrade and that’s the first project I am planning.  I do my drawings using SketchUp.  I am not an expert with the software, but know enough to get a reasonable set of working plans from it.  Then I take the plans to the shop and likely will change most things as I build.  Well here it is the rough drawing for my new desk and computer station:

I need lots of shelves to hold books and junk.

Next on the project planning list is a new pantry cabinet and new shelves and cabinets for the laundry room.  Two of the cats sleep in the laundry room, so, yeah, I’m designing some new kitty beds.

If you need me, I’ll be virtually woodworking at the computer,

Andrew

Friday Wisdom – The Software Demo

When demoing new software to the company CEO, new and severe bugs will suddenly appear forcing the presenter to spend twenty minutes saying, “It didn’t do this during testing.”

This will be followed by a ten minute lecture from the CEO on the importance of quality in engineering.

More wisdom next week,

Andrew
